There are many different prescription drug options (other than narcotics such as vicadin) to treat the inflammation that's associated with rheumatoid arthritis...This person needs to speak to her doctor again...or try seeing a specialist who has worked with rheumatoid arthritis (perhaps an orthopedic doc?) to weigh her options. I can understand her not wanting to use the narcotics, especially when in care of her children..but there's many other things she can try.

there is an OTC product Glucosamine Chondroitin. IT's a bit expensive but worth it. It will help your joints and ease the arthritis. See your PCP to make sure it wont interfere with anything else you may have been prescribed. There are other anti-inflammatory meds and pain medicines (advil, tylenol, aspirin, aleive (sodium naprxen).. But again consult your doctor to make sure it doesn't intererfere with anything you are currently on or may be given..

Maybe she could get her doctor to give her a prescription for a anti-inflammatory drug, and that, combined with aspirin would help some.

There are new treatments for rheumatoid arthritis that are very effective. These are NOT painkillers. They actually work to contol the arthritis, not just suppress the pain.

You can call this toll-free number and talk to a nurse at National Jewish Hospital in Denver (one of the leading research hospitals in the world for respiratory and autimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis). They will be happy to give you information on what treatments are available.

Or, you can talk to your rheumatologist.
